Online Class, Painting Koi & Reflections

Yesterday I spent the afternoon wandering through the marshes with tea in hand, listening to frogs and red-winged blackbirds while the boardwalk carried me over still water and reeds. These walks always feel like a kind of forest bathing for the imagination, a quiet return to observation, myth, and calm.

That atmosphere inspired my next online koi class. We’ll be focusing on how to paint koi beneath reflected skies, trees, and moving water- learning how to merge multiple references together into a unified painting. Real life rarely arranges itself perfectly for us as artists, and part of painting beautifully is learning how to edit, combine, and invent while remaining truthful to nature.

The marshes themselves feel almost Arthurian to me: pathways through mist and water, places where one half expects to glimpse a figure emerging from the reeds with a sword in hand. Water has always carried mythology, memory, and mystery — and I hope to bring some of that feeling into this class.

In this class, students will watch painting demonstrations with live guidance and narrative, walking them straight through the process of idea generation, reference gathering and merging, drawing and composition, as well as execution of two layers of paint. We will go into overpainting, glazing, texture buildup, and the deepening of water to create a three-dimensional painting effect.

Recordings will be made available after the class is over so that you can watch and re-watch. Critiques will also be given on work both in progess and at completion. During the class, live discussion and questions are encouraged!
